If you’re like me, bowl turning was the first thing that attracted me to the wood lathe. It was the first thing I tried to turn by myself when I got my lathe. I also got very frustrated. Woodturning is so much easier and a lot more fun with proper instruction. So I took a basic bowl class, and that made a world of difference. I felt like a child at play after that bowl class, blissfully making a mess of curls and shavings on the floor, but finally creating turnings that looked like bowls!
Let me help you discover your inner woodturning child! I can teach you the basics of bowl turning: how to prepare a wood blank and mount it on the lathe; how to shape the outside and form a foot, or tenon; how to carve out the interior; how to finish the bottom of your bowl. We’ll cover the types of tools used for bowl turning, the accessories that are available for bowl turning, and proper sanding and finishing techniques.
The basic bowl class runs for four (4) hours. Sessions run during the week (during the day or evening), or the weekend. This private, one-on-one session is $350. I accept cash, checks and credit cards (MC and Visa). A deposit of $50 will reserve your date and time; the balance will be due at the beginning of your session.
What do you need to take the course? Your enthusiasm and a desire to learn a new skill that may become a lifelong hobby or possibly a second income. I’ll supply the tools, equipment, faceshield and materials. If you have your own tools, you’re welcome to bring them along, but you won’t need to buy anything ahead of time to take my basic bowl turning course.
Call to schedule the session that will change your world!
Do you know what all good woodturners have in common? They know that sharp tools make a huge difference. They know how to get them sharp and keep them sharp! If you’ve never really gotten the hang of sharpening your woodturning tools, I can help you get on track.
Whether you’ve been turning for awhile or just getting started, learning how to sharpen your own turning tools is essential. Don’t send your turning tools out to a sharpening service! Dull tools won’t cut and can be dangerous. Waiting days or weeks for a service to return your tools is not an option!
I can teach you how to sharpen all your turning tools, and keep then sharp. We’ll cover the variety of methods for sharpening, including bench grinders, (using aluminum oxide and CBN wheels) and hand-held slips stones. I’ll show you how to use some of the grinding jigs that are commercially available to aid in keeping a consistent grind on your tools, as well as sharpening them without those jigs, or free-hand. And finally we’ll cover stropping and honing of the tools, and which tools benefit most from this method.
This completely hands-on course runs for a single two hour (2) session and we can meet during the week (day or evening) or on a weekend.
What do you need to take the course? All your dull woodturning tools – bowl and spindle gouges, skew chisels, parting tools and scrapers!
This private one-on-one hands-on sharpening course is $175.00 for 2 hours. I accept cash, checks and credit cards (MC and Visa). A deposit of $50 will reserve your date and time, and the balance is due at the beginning of your session.
